The Meaning of Hotep: A Nubian Study Guide by Anpu Unnefer Amen

Now I have seen plenty of people say Hotep (in the Black Community that is), and I wondered exactly what the heck did it mean. We all know that people will jump on any band wagon just because they cam, and not know a damn thing they are talking about. So when I came across this little gem in the Kindle store I was excited. I had heard of this author before and was pleased to be able to finally read some of his work.

He goes into an introduction of the word Hotep, that takes you into a nice history of Khemet before it was conquered, raped of its knowledge, desecrated by the incoming religions, and ripped to pieces of all its humanity, making Khemet seem like a desert of ignorance while those who came after claimed that knowledge as theirs, and attempted to write Africa out of history. Which they have done pretty damn well at. It tells you about Hotep as being rooted in the Metu Neter (which you should really get the volumes as they are such an eye awakening experience in knowledge that was hidden, lost and now resurrected). Hotep has political implications as well as spiritual and physical. it is wrapped up in life itself, as I believe it is. You may think different, which is totally fine.

Throughout the reading of this book you will be treated to other ancestors, our forefathers, that have written books that just are not promoted today but easily obtained. I get giddy when I am referenced to new information and new authors and books. Who doesn’t like to expand their knowledge and gain more. You will find that he talks about how Hotep or more accurately Htp is also related t Ptha, or more accurately Pth. HTP:PTH. They are one in the same.

The next few chapters dive into the history of Nubain foundation, the various Kings who have Hotep in their name, Aten, and lineages. There is so much information in this book that I cant actually interpret all I have read. I am still digesting everything that is in it, writing notes, cross referencing, and looking for more information. It has been the best book in defining a term, and connecting its history that I have found on Khemet.

At least know when someones says Hotep I can ask them what they mean by it and engage in a new conversation. The worst thing I want to her, is “I don’t know, or it means greetings”. It is so much more than that, and I hope people actually think about what they say, instead of just saying it. Our words have a rich history and vibration to them, it would be a shame to misuse them due to our arrogance and ignorance.

You really should have this in your library. It will open up and connect information that you may have not known, or may have been confused about.

Cat Magick: Summoning the spirit of Bast through sigil magick by Anousen Leonte

I saw this kindle book when I was browsing a few nights ago, trying to see what else can catch my eye. Now this book is not large it is around 20 minutes or so, but it gives a nice amount of workings that you can do that will probably lead into a few months or more of workings. I always love books like this. If they are small they pack a punch.

It starts off giving some pertinent information of Bast/Beset/Ubastis/Bubastis. Shows her connection with Ra, her worshiping, and what she is known for and what she does.

The next section shows how to conduct a simplified ritual to summon her, her altar, and how to do the sigil. There are hint about incense and colors and beads, all for use with Bast. The ritual is briefly explained as it is of your own choosing what you decide to do. Afterwards there is the sitting in silence to absorb any and all information that you have received from her, to digest.

The last pages of the book are different sides of Bast that you can invoke. I never even thought about blending her with Planetary magick but it is very interesting and I can really see the benefits. Bast can be summoned by the following planets for a few of the following aspects( I will lit only three of the aspects):

None- use for communion, intuition, illumination
Sun- contentedness, protection, unveiling secrets
Moon- serenity, mental strength, peaceful sleep
Mercury- foresight, persuasive communications, intellectual inspiration
Venus- beauty, attracting a mate, serenity
Mars- rid an enemy, strength energy, vitality
Jupiter- wealth, enthusiasm, protection
Saturn- black magick, endurance, mystical inspiration

Each summoning entails, uses, the time, candles, lamps and numbers. Its all very useful and worth the couple bucks.

Sekhmet When the Lion Roars: A Devotional to the Egyptian Goddess edited by Galina Krassokova

I have been looking at this book for a few months. I have been leery of purchasing it because the last book I purchased on Sekhmet turned out to be straight garbage. But this one seemed like it was safe. It is pretty decent, not the greatest, and not the worst.

The first section is on Articles and Essays. This is just about people’s experience when coming into Sekhmet for the first time. Some of it was melodramatic, but it was still interesting to see how they found her, or she found them. I always like to see how people come upon their Deity.

The next section is Prayers and Invocations. This section was pretty interesting with a lot of prayers, hymns and devotionals to her. A lot of them are well written and you can tell they come from the heart. The ones I found useful that I can add and modify into my practice are:

Daily Prayer
A Prayer to Sekhmet
Prayer of Protection
Daughter of Sekhmet
Fierce Sekhmet
Invocations of Sekhmet ( I found these to be wonderful. There are five in all:Artist, Desctuctor, Healer, Warrior and Teacher)
Hymn to Sekhmet II
Prayer to Sekhmet
Awakening of Sekhmet
Awakening of Sekhmet with Egyptian Translation (I would use this on more than the other)

There are around 15 more I believe, but these resonated with me the most.

The third section is called Rituals and Meditations. I found nothing there of any use. Well the last one Sekhmet’s Ritual Objects, but even that is nothing new or useful to me. I do not like a 20 pag ritual, to me it seems they are more worried about the theatrics of the ritual than the ritual itself. Even in my coven we aren’t that melodramatic. Don’t get me wrong, we use props but we don’t spend 3 hours talking. They are geared for a group workings if anything. ALl her rituals that I have came across that have been writing by Pagans are always group workings that seem to like to hear themselves talk. So I read them, half of each, lost my taste for it and skipped them all together. Others may find it useful I don’t.

The last and final section is called Recipes. I found use in this section. I love recipes. I like to get knee deep in my workings. It makes it so personal. These recipes I liked

Sekhmet Blessing Oil (it contains blood for those who may not work with blood)
Sekhmet Oils
Sekhmet Incense (it has a LOT of ingredients, heads up)
Libation offering (very easy only three ingredients)

I can say this book was alright. Was it worth the money, yes. I will be going back to the second part Prayers and Invocations, more often than not for the wealth of information that is there. I see there are some that I may need in the future. A nice addition to our library, no doubt.
